From Alex Isidro:
Shell’s Role:
Populations are growing and economies are developing. The global demand for energy will continue to increase. And finding responsible ways to meet that demand will be the defining challenge of the 21st century.
We’re continuing to invest in the development of alternative sources of energy – but also in finding the most efficient and responsible ways of obtaining energy from fossil fuels, which still account for the vast majority of the world’s energy supply.
Shell’s Vision: Innovating for the New Energy Future:
Shell’s track record of innovation goes back more than a century and we currently hold over 25,000 patents worldwide – more even than NASA.
We’ve achieved some of the industry’s most impressive feats by holding to the belief that for every problem, there’s a solution. That anything can be done if we put our minds to it.
Turn gas to liquids to create a cleaner burning alternative to diesel? Difficult, but not impossible. Make coal burn as cleanly as natural gas? With a bit of original thinking, yes.
Shell’s People: Strength Through Diversity:
With over 102,000 people in more than 100 countries, we’ve learned for ourselves that being an inclusive business is an advantage.
We make a point of hiring people from all walks of life because we know that the more different perspectives we have on board, the greater our chances of solving the problem at hand.
We value people with the ambition and creativity to inject fresh thinking and bring about change. Which is why we encourage the exchange of ideas and reward innovation when we see it.

What motivated you to take an internship at Shell in the first place?
I wanted to do an internship at an international company in a challenging environment and, since Shell has operations in more than 100 different countries, employing over 102,000 people, it was just what I was looking for.
What also appealed to me was the chance to work on real projects that were specifically matched to my interests and abilities.
What role did you play during your internship - did you feel you were doing a 'real job'?
My aim was to add value by bringing a new perspective to each project that I was involved in.
My internship was very flexible, I planned my own work and I learned a lot. Furthermore, I really liked the level of autonomy and responsibility entrusted upon me.
Shell is a truly global organisation.
Whilst best known for service stations and exploration and production activities, Shell has an exceptionally diverse portfolio of interests in 100 different countries. Which is why they can offer a huge range of commercial and technical career opportunities.
Shell has a very professional approach to employees' development, so you'll be expected to bring drive, ambition and talent - and you'll take on a high level of responsibility right from the beginning.
What did you learn about Shell - and about yourself - in the process?
The most important experience during my internship was getting to know the Shell culture. Eventually this led to my decision to take a permanent job in the Shell research department.
I had the chance to test all my skills, including team-building, working, planning, handling budgets and projects of different scope. To a certain extent, it was more than just testing my skills. I found out strengths and weak points within my abilities, discovered my personal frontiers and expanded upon them.
What helped you to decide to accept the Shell job offer after the internship was over?
It was crucial for me to find a job that I would enjoy, a job I could be genuinely passionate about.
Thanks to the internship, I knew exactly what would be expected me, both from a professional standpoint, and from the perspective of the working culture and atmosphere. My team is highly supportive and does everything to ensure a healthy and positive atmosphere.
Furthermore, compared to some other companies I'd worked for, Shell offers a really unique cooperative culture, where individuals really can make a difference and are supported by the company wherever possible.
The people I've met during my time at Shell were extremely open, motivated and enthusiastic, which made for a very pleasant work environment. After getting to know the company culture a little better, I knew I wanted to work for this company.
Another important point for me was that Shell could offer me a range of diverse career opportunities in a multicultural environment, including different countries.
Also the fact that Shell offers the chance to incorporate learning into both professional and personal development was crucial. Furthermore, working for Shell enables to address the key economic, social and environmental development issues of a high profile organisation having to make corporate decisions to the benefit of all stakeholders.
Would you recommend an internship to other high-achieving students and why?
From a technical point of view, the oil industry and the renewable energy sector will be of key economic importance in the decades to come. Finding solutions for energy supply and global warming issues will be increasingly important for future generations.
From a professional point of view, I can recommend an internship because it opens the gates to a leading energy company, which has many lucrative and interesting career opportunities.
During your internship you have to be prepared for challenging tasks and real responsibility from day one. Additionally, a lot of emphasis is placed on the value of the individual and the contribution you can make to the team.
I've been impressed how fair, open and objective the assessment process was and the value proposition of Shell's Graduate Program sounded very appealing to me.
I discovered just how creative and flexible Shell is as a corporation, and was impressed by the fact that they are always achieving their goals.
An internship with Shell is definitely not "everyday fun", it is a "real job experience".
